NEW WEBSITE

Hey all,

The studios are gearing up for the television season and the mid august deadline. Our video describes some of this process.

This gear-up means that agencies are all reviewing their clients with one thing in mind: cutting or adding new clients so that their clients can get booked on the TV shows. This is the most active times for agencies right now. And, it is crucial that you stay on top. A new updated headshot and look is what top agents are asking of their clients. Staying ahead of the game and understanding what is happening in the industry is extremely important.

To our readers,
This week we are compiling our data from agents, managers, and casting directors to provide an article about what trends we saw in headshots during pilot season.

What worked, What didn’t and where the industry is heading. This article will be out later this week so keep updated. For further information please visit www.michaelroud.com.

Actors always come to me or ask me if they need retouching or if we include retouching in our packages. They always seem to think that retouching is sooo important and that they can’t get good pictures without extensive retouching. Below are two pictures from our shoot today, with Vanessa Baden, that are not retouched.

There is a lot of controversy surrounding what type of actor headshots character actors need. Now, no one person has the same opinion but what we have found is that it is good to have specific headshots in terms of look and feel but not to make the headshot too specific.

In terms of too specific, upon talking to casting directors, it is not necessary to take a pictures in scrubs if you want to be a doctor. Rather, it would be more effective to take an academic and strong, educated looking headshot instead and allow the casting director to do their job.

There has been a lot of controversy and discussion concerning what lighting works best for Headshots. Is natural light best or should Headshots be done with studio light. There is no hard and fast answer to this and it depends on the individual and what lighting works best for that given person. I often think that studio light combined with natural light often yields the best results.

Our studio just got in some really interesting and useful reflectors and lights that have been yielding some incredible results.

Theatrical headshots and headshots in general that allow you to stand out are important. Our LA photography studio also believes the other important aspect that actors forget is that each of you have a unique look and honing into what that is, is extremely important.

Rachel Bahman is a talented actress that our studio just photographed. she understood her ethnically ambigious look and went for it on some of these headshots. We believe that this will help her for roles within the industry and the indie film market. Thus far, agents and managers seem to have been responded positively.

To our readers,

I wanted to discuss the importance of standing out with your headshots as an actor. You must stand out to casting directors and agents.

They look through thousands of headshots at a time. On average, your headshot is looked at for less than one-third of a second. That period of time is about how long it takes you to blink twice. So actors, it is important that you do everything that you can to stand out in your headshot. And now the industry is moving away from printing and toward thumbnails and web casting, such as LA Casting, Actors Access, etc…
