Thom Favaloro

We recently photographed young actor Thom Favaloro who heard about us from some of his colleagues at his acting school and decided to shoot with us. He is a fun, charismatic actor from New Orleans, Louisiana who began modeling and acting at the age of 18. After graduating college he moved to Los Angeles to further pursue his acting career. He landed a lead role in the upcoming film Birdemic II: The Resurrection 3-D, the sequel to the romantic thriller Birdemic: Shock and Terror.

Thom plays an up and coming director named Bill, whose life takes a dramatic turn when a platoon of eagles and vultures attack Hollywood. The film just wrapped and is planned to be released worldwide later this year.

Thom is currently studying at Joanne Baron/D.W. Brown Studio while auditioning.

Headshot Breakdown: Is Your Headshot Right for You?

We recently photographed actor Reece Kirk who is known in Australia for various movie roles and professional wrestling. He came to Los Angeles to further pursue his acting career. He went to a local photographer to get his theatrical headshots done. Headshots in hand, Reece was ready to go out and book some roles. After a few months of using the headshots he was not getting called in as much as he wanted or for the roles most suited for him. Reece identified his character as edgy, dramatic, and contemplative, and it was clear that he needed new headshots that would get him out for these types of roles.

This theatrical headshot is not well suited for Reece for a variety of reasons. His black shirt and dark background cause his face to blend in rather than pop out. I’m not convinced by Reece’s smile and there is not enough intrigue behind his eyes. His skin tone is green and blotchy which is somewhat distracting. For me the most important issue is that it isn’t clear what character Reece is personifying.

This shot we did in my studio is clean, professional and the character is edgy and interesting. His eyes hold a hint of a secret and makes the audience want to engage with him. Reece has been much more successful and has gotten a more positive response from these pictures.

Yesterday our studio photographed Disney star Shannon Buckel in our Los Angeles Photography Studio. Shannon needed both theatrical and commercial headshots. We saw that she had strong features and decided that a hard strobe light would be the best for her edgy theatrical headshots.

Hey all,

The studios are gearing up for the television season and the mid august deadline. Our video describes some of this process.

This gear-up means that agencies are all reviewing their clients with one thing in mind: cutting or adding new clients so that their clients can get booked on the TV shows. This is the most active times for agencies right now. And, it is crucial that you stay on top. A new updated headshot and look is what top agents are asking of their clients. Staying ahead of the game and understanding what is happening in the industry is extremely important.

Headshots and Retouching….To Retouch or Not!!!

Actors always come to me or ask me if they need retouching or if we include retouching in our packages. They always seem to think that retouching is sooo important and that they can’t get good pictures without extensive retouching. Below are two pictures from our shoot today, with Vanessa Baden, that are not retouched.

Vanessa Baden is a very talented actress who starred in Keenan and Kel and Gullah Gullah Island. Retouching is not the end all be all of a good photoshoot or pictures. If the photography knows what they are doing and the hair and makeup artist is good then often the pictures do not need to be retouched. Probably about half of the pictures on our website are not retouched. Remember, if you are getting retouching for headshots it must look and feel natural. Looking like you do in your headshots, except on your best and most glamourous day, is one of the most important elements of having a strong and effective headshot.
